Soldier Dog by Sam Angus review

Soldier Dog
Synopsis
He’ll always be true, faithful and brave, even to the last beat of his heart.
It’s 1917. In the trenches of France, miles from home, Stanley is a boy fighting a man’s war. He is a dog handler, whose dog must be so loyal that he will cross no-man’s-land alone under heavy fire to return to Stanley’s side, carrying a message that could save countless lives. But this journey is fraught with danger, and only the bravest will survive.

As the fighting escalates and Stanley experiences the true horror of war, he comes to realize that the loyalty of his dog is the only thing he can rely on.

This book is about Stanley in the first world war.  He loves dogs. He lies about his age to get into a army. This was a ok book. I liked it but it wouldn't be a book i be rushing to any time soon.

Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver review

Wolf Brother (Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, #1)
Six thousand years ago. Evil stalks the land. Only twelve-year-old Torak and his wolf-cub companion can defeat it. Their journey together takes them through deep forests, across giant glaciers, and into dangers they never imagined.

This book is about Torak bonding with people and animals. At first Renn, the main female character, seems like a villain but over the course of the book she is like a hero even if she doesn't want to believe it herself.
It certainly has lots of adventure and thrills. At times I thought I knew what was going to happen and then there's a plot twist.
One issue I did have is there were lots of spelling and grammar mistakes.  They probably need to get themselves a better proofreader.
All in all a good book and I want to read the sequel.

Wolf Brother (Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, #1)

He cast around the riverbank for food, but saw only the dead wolves, and they smelt too bad even to think about. Hopelessness washed over him.

Teaser Tuesdays#6

This week i'm reading January by Gabrielle Lord.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in the house was how unusually quiet it was. Mum had left a note on the fridge.

If you're reading this it's too late review.

Out of the two recent read sequels, This was one by far the best. I really like Bosch's quirky writing style. Many have compared it too Lemony Snicket. I cannot comment on that since I haven't read any of those books. This book is great with the old characters and the new ones. It has plenty of references to the first book. Bosch also makes sure that readers who picked this one up not knowing it was part of a series understand some of the bits that were going on. There was never a dull bit. I am proud to give this book my first ever 5 star rating.

The ask and the answer review

The Ask and the Answer (Chaos Walking, #2)
The good things about sequels is that you know the characters and don't have to waste time introducing them. You can just jump straight into the answer. Ness thinks differently. He thinks that we don't know who these characters are and introducing them is a must. I will read the final book in the series so i know how everything will be resolved and I can't stand not knowing what's going to happen.

The City of Ember review

The City of Ember (Book of Ember, #1)

Many hundreds of years ago,the city of Ember was created by the builders to contain everything needed for human survival. It worked... but now the storerooms are almost out of food, corruption is spreading throughout the city and worst of all-the lights are failing. Soon Ember could be engulfed by darkness...

But when two children,Lina and Doon discover fragments of an ancient parchment, they begin to wonder if there could be a way out of Ember. Can they decipher the words from long ago and find a new future for everyone?

The City of Ember has been around for 200 years(Not the book) Food is running out ,Blackouts are happening more often and Ember is falling apart. Lina and Doon discover a long lost scroll and they start looking for a way out of Ember.

I liked this book.not loved but liked. Lina and Doon were believable characters. The plot wasn't too far-fetched. It had some plot twists that I didn't see coming and I enjoyed this read.

The book started off slow paced but it picked speed up about chapter 6-7. It had some interesting chapters but a slow paced one always follows a interesting chapter.

I will be reading the sequel since I liked this book and I hope the sequel will improve on the areas that were bad.

The Knife of Never Letting Go review

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1)Todd Hewitt is the last boy in Prentisstown.
But Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone's  thoughts in a constant, overwhelming never-ending Noise. There is no privacy. There are no secrets.

Or are there?
Just one month away from the birthday that will make him a man,Todd unexpectedly stumbles upon a spot of complete silence. Which is impossible. Prentisstown has been lying to him. And now he's going to have to run...

The Knife of Never Letting Go is a good book with the message don't believe everything you hear. Todd is the last boy in Prentisstown. and he can't wait to become a man at the age of thirteen. All the women have been destroyed by the Spackle and there is only men left. That's what Todd thinks anyway. The truth couldn't be more different.

There is character development in this which is good in my books(no pun intended). This book is dark and grim and should never be read in the dark. Todd, the main male character, is likeable and serious when he should be but also cracks a joke from time to time. Viola, the main female character, landed because of a crash landing in a spaceship and Viola is stuck on Earth for seven months. At first i thought this idea didn't really fit in with the book but as I read the book it gradually made more sense in the universe that Ness created.

The villains are despicable. The villains are definitely the most baddest(for lack of a better word) villains in all the books that I read. The main villain is this book is Aaron and he gets what he deserves. The book is setting up the villain for the next book which will be the Mayor of Prentisstown.

Some bits feel rushed like the fork bit ,others feel slow paced like the quest for water.

The Name of This Book Is Secret review

The Name of This Book Is SecretWarning: this description has not been authorized by Pseudonymous Bosch. As much as he'd love to sing the praises of his book (he is very vain), he wouldn't want you to hear about his brave 11-year old heroes, Cass and Max-Ernest. Or about how a mysterious box of vials, the Symphony of Smells, sends them on the trail of a magician who has vanished under strange (and stinky) circumstances. And he certainly wouldn't want you to know about the hair-raising adventures that follow and the nefarious villains they face. You see, not only is the name of this book secret, the story inside is, too. For it concerns a secret. A Big Secret

Cass and Max-Ernest are friends who find a magician's notebook   and some of the pages have been ripped out so they go on a quest to find the missing pages. They end up at a spa run by a old lady and there's a skeleton sister in the spa.

This was a great book. I was turning the next page as soon as  i could. It's a gripping read.

The London eye mystery review

When Ted and Kat watched their cousin Salim get on board the London Eye, he turned and waved before getting on. But after half an hour it landed and everyone trooped off - but no Salim. Where could he have gone? How on earth could he have disappeared into thin air?

So Ted and his older sister, Kat, become sleuthing partners, since the police are having no luck. Despite their prickly relationship, they overcome their differences to follow a trail of clues across London in a desperate bid to find their cousin. And ultimately it comes down to Ted, whose brain works in its own very unique way, to find the key to the mystery.

This book was amazing. Ted and Kat's cousin Salim came to visit with Aunt Gloria. The family suggested to go to the London eye. Salim went off but he didn't get off.

This book was in the view of Ted who is autistic. Ted wants to solve the mystery and has plenty of theories about where  Salim is but his family won't listen to him. Ted and Kat bond together to solve the mystery and they form a new relationship.

When you think you know where Salim is a twist comes and knocks your theory out of the water. Once the mystery is solved it's something nobody will see coming.

I only have one flaw with this book and that is some bits are really slow paced but other than that this book is perfect.

Finding the fox by Ali Sparkes review.

Dax Jones is an ordinary schoolboy . . . until something extraordinary happens one day. Whilst frightened for his life, he inexplicably changes into a fox! Before long, both a government agent and an ambitious young journalist are on his tail. The agent tells him that he is one of several children with special powers and he's been offered a place at a secret government school where he can develop, and learn to control, these powers. If Dax accepts, on no account can he tell anybody, especially not the journalist. Dax jumps at the chance of attending the boarding school. His home life is unhappy and he would do anything to escape it. And when he gets to the school, he is amazed to find himself amongst kids with all sorts of talents, from the ability to levitate to the ability to move things using only the mind. Dax immediately feels at home. But first the journalist tracks him down. And then he begins to wonder who exactly is behind the school, and what they want from the pupils there. Suddenly Dax's fox senses are on high alert . . .

This is an amazing book. Dax has this special ability to turn into an fox. There are other people like him called COLA'S. COLA stands for children of limitless ability. There are many plot twists in this. Quick pace which is also something I enjoy. Good character development.

When I was Joe by Keren David review

When I was Joe

When I Was JoeWhen Ty witnesses the knife murder of another boy he identifies some very dangerous people and the police put him and his mother into hiding in a witness protection scheme. While they are packing, a petrol bomb is thrown through the front door of their flat, highlighting the extreme danger they face. Over the coming months, Ty becomes Joe, is given a new look and starts at a new school. To his surprise, he finds he is attracting the attention of the girls in his class, and the boys find his need to conceal his real identity cool - being Joe is not so bad. His ability as a runner is spotted and he starts training under a college student, a wheelchair user who is a Paralympics contender, but this special treatment attracts resentment. Somehow Joe keeps drawing attention to himself despite his efforts to remain anonymous. Then his beloved grandmother back in London is badly injured in an attack designed to flush Ty out of hiding and demonstrates the relentless determination to silence him

This isn't my normal type of read so I wasn't sure what to except. The basic plot is at Ty sees a murder and has to go into the witness protection program. He has to change everything about him. His name, his hair and even his eye colour.  Ty is now called Joe and Joe leads an very different life than Ty's. This was an great read. Claire who has an secret of her own is probaly one of my favourite characters. Ellie is training for the paralympics  who is also Claire's sister. I didn't want to put the book down. I had to read chapter after chapter.

Do you lend your books? Are any out on loan right now? Do you have any that have been loaned to you? Do you put a time limit on these? Do you think people should make an effort to read the loaned book quickly?

I don't really lend my books out for one of two reasons. 1. I normally get books from the library.  2. It's a good book and i don't want the person to lose it.
